The Russian attack on the Finnish lighthouse Bengtskõr near Hanko, Southern Finland. Date: 25th July 1941. Location: Bengtskaer lighthouse, south of Hanko Map scale: 100 m/hex Time scale: halp day turns Unit scale: squad/platoon Lenght: 8 turns UNIT COLORS Finland White on blue Soviet Union White on red GENERAL OUTLINES The confrontation takes place on a small island where the Bengtskaer lighthouse is located. Soviet troops are trying to capture the lighthouse and its associated building in order to make Finnish reconnaissance in the area more difficult. The Hanko area had been rented for the Soviet forces after the Winter War and they are still occupying it. Therefore Finnish forces patrol in the area on a regular basis. FORCES Finnish defenders consist of one platoon of soldiers led by leutenant Luther and two small squads of lighthouse guards. The artillery on the island is represented as one piece of infantry artillery. Two ironclads Vainamoinen and Ilmarinen are patrolling around the area. Soviet attacking force consists of three Gun boats and three platoons of soldiers. REINFORCEMENTS Finnish reinforcements: 1 squad led by Asvik, 4. turn 1 platoon led by Kaikkonen, 5. turn 3 fighters, 4. turn Soviet reinforcements: 1 demolition squad, 3. turn 4 fighterbombers, 4. turn 4 bombers, 5. turn OBJECTIVES Finnish: Defend the lighthouse and adjacent hexes. Wait for reinforcements to arrive. Soviet: Conquer the lighthouse and adjacent hexes. ACTUAL HISTORICAL EVENTS The actual history has been modified only slightly in this skenario. One additional unit has been added into the Finnish force pool (the other guard unit) and artillery support has been omitted. The soviet forces have been modified: They never succeeded in landing the demolishion squad on the island. Their artillery support has been omitted also. Soviet forces put heavy pressure on the Finnish defenders and succeeded in conquering the first floor of the lighthouse where defenders had retreated. The situation looked quite bad for the defenders. Then the tight turned: Finnish reinforcements landed on the island and one Soviet gunboat was sunk. The last Soviet soldiers surrendered 17.22 PM on 26th. Next day Soviet bombers raided Bengtskaer and killer 15 men and wounded 14 men. About 40 Russian soldier were killed during the battles. 36 Finnish soldiers lost their lives. CONTACT INFORMATION Scenario design by Jarno Tuimala. Jarno.Tuimala@Helsinki.Fi |
