After the Ems telegram affaire, Napoleon III declared war on Prussia (July 19 1870). He was hoping support from Austria and Italia, but that never materialized.
Both sides mobilized their forces and were more or less ready to begin operations at the start of August. The French Army attacked Saarbrücken on August 2, and 2 days later Moltke launched his ofensive. After a month of bloody battles, the French Imperial Army surrendered at Sedan (September 4 1870)

The military technic of the time favoured the defender, however, commanders in both sides had their heads full of Napoleonic campaigns. The result was bloody frontal attacks. Try to avoid that.
A good defence is your best option, you are heavily outnumbered. Be careful don´t get outflanked.
The Prussians won the war accepting heavy casualties, but managing to take vital strategic locations. You can repeat that tactic, or you can manouver around your opponent,, taking advantage of your superior numbers. In any case, Metz must be secured, the sooner the better.
