KARBALA-1 : THE BATTLE FOR MEHRAN *** The Iran-Iraq War was nearing the end of its fourth year and Iraqi President Saddam Hussein had precious little to show for the lives and treasure expended in the war he had precipitated with Iran. In order keep up morale in the army and at home he needed a victory- preferably a cheap one. The southern front, where the majority of Iranian troops were located, seemed to offer little promise in this regard. Farther north, however, was a town named Mehran that seemed to fit the bill. The town was seized easily in May 1985 by troops of the Iraqi 2nd Corps. Once they took the town, they stopped to fortify their positions and were content to stay there, not even bothering to patrol the surrounding mountains. Taking advantage of this laxity, the Iranians built up a counter-attack force that struck back in June. The attack not only retook Mehran, but managed to drive several kilometers west of the town, decisively smashing an Iraqi armored counter-attack in the process with the help of TOW missiles. In the fighting around Mehran, both sides made use of chemical weapons, the Iranians using mustard gas and the Iraqis using nerve and cyanide agents. These weapons took a fearful toll of both sides' troops, but Iraqis were better equipped to deal with this threat.
