3. AXIS STRATEGY Your opponents will be easy to handle on the continent, but in order to win you need to knock England out of the war. This can best happen if your marines appear in Amsterdam after Dunkirk falls and in the ensuing allied chaos your best opportunity to capture London in a couple turns. You also get a supply depot in Dover. There is only a 5% chance of this happening since German grand strategy was purely continental. Operation Sealion is doomed to fail in september 1940, since the Canadians are in England and there are plenty of allied fighters and bombers ready to defend the home island. You best bet, yet difficult but possible, is to break through to Cairo with Rommel, but British resistance will be stiff and Axis units in Africa are very limited as is time. Use the Luftwaffe effectively in this endeavor, as allied air is very weak in that theater. If you take Cairo, you win. Get ownership of all hexes in conquered nations, especially Poland, France and Norway to usher in the occupation units. 4. ALLIED STRATEGY You will suffer a severe beating on the continent, but there is little chance of London falling. You can have your moments by attempting to annihilate the Italians in Albania with your Greek units, which is easily possible. But beware, the Germans will give you payback in April 1941. You can also annihilate Grazianis army in Libya and capture Tobruk. They are numerous , but poorly supplied. Watch for the Afrika Korps, try to hold Tobruk and keep Rommel out of Alexandria and Cairo. If you are cautious you can stop him at Tobruk and get the historical outcome which you are thriving for. 5. COMMENTS It is difficult to create a game of grand strategy in the WWII caliber with this engine. The others I have seen were good attemtps but left too many historically inaccurate loopholes and lots of room for cheating. In one, I was able to drop german paras on Paris on turn 1 and conquered England by the end of october 39. I solved the problem by using exclusion zones and making armies appear and dissapear as events dictated. This game will pretty much follow historical events with some critical options open to the players. You can watch the AI play itself well and its a great teaching aid for those who want to show their students the military actions that took place in Europe from 1939 to mid 1941. I used to play Avalon Hills Third Reich and it greatly influenced the creation of this scenario. |
