"Come, let us four to dinner. I dare say this quarrel will drink blood another day." - Shakespeare, the famous 1990s movie director. The year is 1955 in an alternate universe. Here, things have occured much as they did in our world. However, the English War of the Roses are happening at last... four hundred years after they did in our reality. It is in this swirling malstrom of intrigue and deceit that the Yorkists and Lancastrians turn to their commander (you) to lead them to victory and be the power behind the throne. Each side has a leader, but in the end there can only be one... KINGMAKER! SCALE: 10km per hex CLIMATE: varies with season - mainly temperate MAP SIZE: 112 x 102 TURNS: 100 maximum (less achieving special mission objectives). TURN LENGTH: Half-week turns FORMATIONS: Units are regimental level. Most on Army Support, a few on Force Support. EVENTS: Random allocation of reinforcements from new faction members, cities, and awarding of government posts. Weather changes for season. SPECIAL OBJECTIVES: Capture of any three of the four prime Lancastrian objectives means instant victory, even if they are lost in successive turns. Each Yorkist prime objective brings a large point bonus to the Lancastrians which will mean instant victory when points reach a certain level. (This difference because there is only one "variable" tracked by the events engine, couldn't have two going for each side) THEATER OPTIONS: Each side can hire certain foreign mercenaries. However, the British greatly dislike having foreign troops on their soil and your supply stockpile will suffer a slight drop for each band of mercenaries you hire. This is culmulative! Still, they're handy if you need troops desperatley. SPECIAL NOTES: Reinforements appear at one of the factions major objectives. (the ones you start out with at the beginning of the game) Watch your units here to make sure you haven't overlooked a stack of fresh troops. This can make a lighting thrust on an enemy objective early in the battle somewhat risky... but it can be done and is a viable strategy. STRATEGY NOTES: This is a game of meeting engagements. Bascially the computer (who plays very aggressively) will send out its forces to take your objectives. You must decide whether to hold back your reinforcements to defeat them, or throw your reinforcements likewise at enemy objectives. The assignment of reinforcements is random and you may find yourself with a completley different situation each game. This means you may never know where you will meet the enemy. However, you can expect heavy engagements in north Wales (wonderful defensive terrain!!), in the York area, and especially between London and Hastings on the Channel coast. Also, sometimes the die rolls go against you and you may find yourself hopelessly outnumbered. Don't be shy about abjuring the realm and fleeing abroad to temporary exile... that is, quitting the game and starting over. EASTER EGGS: There are two special units hidden in the OOB that can only be added by occupying certain areas. Unfortunatley in playtest, I could not get the Yorkists to receive these units. I am still trying to find the fault in the events file. Neither of these units make much impact in the game at all. They were just put in by a practical joking scenario creator. CREDITS WHERE CREDITS ARE DUE: This scenario based on the Avalon-Hill 1994 computer game "Kingmaker". Historical sources include the excellently written "Historical Manual" that came with this game. Also, Sir Winston Churchill's "History of the English Speaking People, Vol. I-III" Map based on "British Isles", a 1979 National Geographic map. Unit composition based on Andy Johnson's "NATO Order of Battle 1989" in order to build realistic forces. THE WAR OF THE ROSES By Tony Velasquez velasqua@grovenet.net |
