GULF WAR: the 1991 ground war Desert Storm Version 1.0 A conversion of the GDW's game "Phase Line Smash" (1992) Scale: 6 h /turns - Brigade level - 10 km/Hex 26 turns - Begin: pre-dawn, february 24, 1991 Environnement: Southern climate, occasional precipitation, hot temperature -- GAME COLORS -- COALITION: US 1st AD: red US 1st CD: yellow US 2ndACR/210FA: dark red US Tiger Bde - 2ndAD: dark green US 2-101 AD: pale green XVIII corps: medium green US 3rd AD: grass green US 24th ID: dark green US VII corps support: olive drab US 1st ID: tan US air force: blue UK 1st AD: tan SA/KU/EGII/SY9 : dark grey IRAK: IV corps: grey/black symbol VII corps: grey/white symbol Jihad corps: grey/white-blue symbol IIA corps: grey/grey symbol RGM Taw: black/blue symbol RGM Arty: black/black symbol RGM Med: black/red symbol RGM Ham: black/brown symbol RGI arty: white/grey symbol RGI Neb: white/yellow symbol RGI Faw: white/blue symbol RGI Adn: white/yellow-red symbol RGI SF: white/olive drab symbol Date : february 24th-marsh 2nd, 1991 Location : KTO, Kuwait Theater of Operations -- General context -- Irak always claimed Kuwait as a part of Irak. Rich oil fields exist in Kuwait and north-east Saudi Arabia and are a big target for a dictator. Moreover, Saddam Hussein wanted to lead the Arabs' country, replacing the Saudis and the Egyptians. Several claims were justification for an attack on Kuwait. Nobody believed that Saddam Hussein will attack Kuwait, an Arab's brother country. He did it ! Americans have monitored the iraki troops building on the Irak-Kuwait frontier. The august 2nd, 1990, iraqi's troops invaded Kuwait. Saddam Hussein raised a dagger on the throat of the mondial economy, therefore especially on the western world, as well as invading an UN country. He could not believe that the western world would send troops on the soil of an Arabs'country, especially on a holy soil. The western and Arabs' countries reply was overwhelming and decisive. The desert shield and storm operation was the biggest and most complex military operation since WWII deployed by the western countries. In the cold war era, this military clash would certainly degenerate in a WWIII, but this time was ended. A new world order was coming. The Gulf war was the beginning of this new era together with the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. It's up to you now to stop a brutal dictator menacing the world newly found peace. Crush the Iraqi's army and save Kuwait ...and the petrol must flow ! For an Iraqi's player: crush the Coalition troops and capture the Kuwaiti's and, maybe, the Saudi's richest oil field in the world, and become the leader of all Arabs' countries. -- Player's advices -- this is a bliztkrieg kind of war. Gen. N. Schwarzkopf described, in his book, the need for a precise timing and short duration of this operation. So, be quick and decisive. However, you must feel a sense of caution in the operation, i.e. preserve the lives of the coalition soldiers. In the PLS game, a large penalty is put to the loss of a coalition unit. This is not the case with a TOAW game. The fastest gain of the objectives is a challenge in this scenario. Coalition player/irak computer: The Republican guard units must be destroyed and their northern escape roads must be closed, so smash into them. Each formation had objectives during desert storm, roughtly: 101th AAD, 24th ID, XVIII corps objectives were to close the Euphrate road (North), objective orange to Anvil. VII corps, 2ACR, 3ACR, 1 AD were to outflank and, slam and destroyed the RG forces up to objectives Raleigh and Anvil. UK forces and 1ID were to attacked in a fixation point up to norfolk and dorset objectives, then turn towards hawk to denver objectives. 1CD is a fixation point for concentrating Iraqi's defenses, masking the left hook of XVIII corps and VII corps allied forces. The allied Arabs' forces are to attack into kuwait up to south varsity and denver line of objectives. Their main concern is in Kuwait city (east of the present map). However, the Tiger brigade has the alamo objective. Irak player / Coalition computer: Defend your position in Kuwait and south-east Irak. You must hold a sufficient number of objectives before marsh 2nd, 1991, since a cease fire will take place because mostly of Moscow efforts. -- Reinforcements -- There are only Coalition's reinforcements: As part of the 1st MB attacking in Eastern Kuwait US Tiger brigade, on turn 10 (Alamo) From the left hook, NW move: US 24th ID, turn 12 (North west map edge) US 101th AAD, turn 14 (Fob Viper) US XVIII corps, turn 14 (NW edge) US 24th ID 197th bde and Avn dde (NW edge) -- Point for reformed units (R) -- Irak: Basra Coalition: hex (11,27) -- Formation support level -- all formations have a force support level. Air force has a free support level. US/UK troops are assumed veterans, Egypt's 2nd corps is assumed veteran, Saoudian, Kuwaiti and Syrian's forces are assumed untried. Iraqi's VII and IV corps are assumed untried, Iraqi's RG forces are assumed veterans. There are no special effects or events, only news. The formation and force characteristics are taken from the rule book of TOAWII (UK edition). --References-- "From shield to storm" by J.F. Dunnigan, A. Bay "Arabian nightmare" a 3W game by A.
