Scenario by: Bud Windham EMAIL: bud@c-gate.net ********** Jul 1940: The USA begins Operation Bisect. the plan calls for a landing and occupation of New Orleans. The Newly formed 3rd USA Army could also open a offensive into Tennessee and down the Mississippi River. Both forces would then link up in Vicksburg, Ms. This would cut the CSA in half and hopefully end the war. The USA begins landing forces in the port of New Orleans. The CSA, with troubles all along their long border is unable to put up much of a defense. The CSA forces are pushed out of New Orleans and a secure foothold is made for the USA Expeditionary force. The force consists of a Corps of 4 Divisions One of which Is armor. Meanwhile the 3rd USA Army begins its offensive and Drives the CSA Army of Tennessee back from the Kentucky, Tennessee boarder. The CSA reform in the vicinity of the old Shiloh battlefield and hold the USA onslaught for a few days but Are finally defeated and forced to retreat. They reform again just North of Grenada,Ms and prepare a last ditch defense against the USA juggernaut. Aug 1940 Early in the month the CSA, after deciphering the USA intentions. Rush the much vaunted I corps ANV to Mississippi. They are trained in and deploy around the Laurel, Hattiesburg area of Mississippi. This formation, comprised of the Stonewall Jackson Armor Div., the AP Hill Light Mech Div, and the 3rd Mot. Div is the cream of the CSA armed forces. The CSA named several of their Divisions after the great heroes from their war of independence. They were also different from the USA in their policy of keeping brigades of men from the same state together. This was because in the Confederacy, states rights were all important and each state had a voice in how the troops from their state were used. Also of course thatĘs how they did it in the war of Independence and traditions like this remained strong. The USA seeking to form a strong union amongst their states put all the new recruits into a group from which various divisions were formed. So the USA soldier fought side by side with soldiers from all the states in the Union. On July 31st the Union expeditionary corps in New Orleans strikes out for its rendevoux with the 3rd USA army in Vicksburg. USA intelligence fails to garner the knowledge of I Corps ANV and so the USA command is unprepared for it. I Corps ANV attacks the Union expeditionary force south of Columbia,Ms and defeats it in a series of pitched battles. The Union force retreats to New Orleans and fortifies in preparation of a siege. The 1st Infantry Div also attacks West out of New Orleans with The capitol of La., Baton Rouge its Obj. Baton Rouge is taken Aug. 12th but retaken by CSA forces before the month is out. 1st Div. Retreats back to the works of New Orleans to join the rest of the Expeditionary force. Meanwhile the 3rd USA army has better luck and pushes the CSA forces back to Just North of Vicksburg. The I Corps ANV leaving the 3rd Mot Division and several brigades of Ms national Guardsmen to watch the Union forces bottled up in New Orleans, Moves to reinforce the battered CSA Army of Tennessee. They however are only able to stop the forward Movement of the 3rd USA army and the battle is stalemated as both Countries scrounge for new forces to throw into the fray. The CSA does manage to keep control of Vicksburg and Natchez to keep the supply lines from Texas opened. Excerpt from Through the Glass Darkly a Alternate History.
