TERUEL 1937. By Pablo Martin 2.000. After a year and a half of bloody civil war, the balance of war shift to Franco`s side after he conquered the northern provinces. Confident in a fast victory, Franco leisurely assembled a powerful army Northeast of Madrid for the final blow to Spain`s capital city. But as this happen, the Spanish Republic set in motion seizing the initiative. People s Army Chief of Staff, Gen. Rojo, set the stage for the swift extirpation op the Teruel bulge. Although it`s clockwork execution, taking full advantage of surprise, was the first great success of the People`s Army in the war and the first major town captured by its forces, it took place in a secondary front and the gap could be easily closed by Franco s forces. Subsequently, the Spanish Republic tried to rapidly consolidate it`s gains and strike again in another front in order to keep Franco unbalanced. But Franco, lacking the most essential strategic ability and ignoring advice from both it`s own staff and foreign military attaches, shifted his forces to the Teruel Front obsessed with recapturing Teruel. Another year and a half more of civil war were about to begin. Selected Bibliografy: For a general view of the war, "La Guerra de Franco" by Cesar Vidal.
