Bridging capability lies solely with British Bridge Battalions. Allies operation to outflank the Westwall and bring war to a quick close. Date: September 17, 1944 Location: South Holland, Northwestern Germany Map Scale: 2,5 km per hex Time Scale: Daily turns Unit Scale: Battalions/Companies Length: 65 Turns UNIT COLORS: ALLIED American Airborne: Dark Green on Green Army: Green on Green British Airborne: White on Red British Army: White on Brown Polish: Green on Red Dutch: Green on Brown Belgium: Red on Brown AXIS German Army: White on Gray Luftwaffe Parachute & Flak: Blue on Gray SS divisions: Black on Gray Kriegsmarine: Light Purple on Gray Briefing: The German Army remains in chaos follwowing the retreat from the Falaise pocket as few units remain any unit integrity. The Allies blow right right Belgium and easily capture the port of Antwerp. Van Zangen's 15th Armee finds itself almost trapped defending the Dutch coast in the Scheldt by the Canadians and British. For the German soldier fleeing through Holland, there is only the thought of returning back to Germany. Dutch citizens watch the retreat in dismay as long columns of German soldiers stray back to Germany. The Allies take the oppurtunity of the situation to turn it in their favor. A great airborne operation, the largest ever in history, is planned in just days to capture three vital bridges to allow the British XXX Corps to outflank the formidable German Westwall defenses and destroy V-1 rocket sites. But already the Germans are turning back around. The German airborne genius, General Kurt Student, is sent to Holland to command the First Parachute Army to stop the British advance. The II SS Panzer Corps, unknowingly to the Allies, is sent just outside Arnhem to refit and relax. Retreating German soldiers, airmen, and sailors are placed in ad hoc airborne units and thrown into the German line to form the Division Erdmann and Walther. Also, divisions from Van Zangen's 15 Army are escaping the Scheldt and are arriviing in the sector. In addition, even if Operation Market Garden is successful, the Allies have to concern themselves with the Dutch city of Venlo which sticks out like a sore thumb in the Allies exposed flank. The Germans can be expected to send armored reinforcements through this bridgehead to cut off the Allied XXX Corps. The operation runs through November to give the Allies a chance to fully capture Arnhem and the Venlo bridgehead. Notes: This scenario is particuliarly interesting to me because I went to High School in Holland and lived on the German/Dutch border just a scant 15 kilometers from Venlo. This is the first version and it doesn't allow the Allies to make any changes to the original Allied airborne plan. Once I get the PO acting rationally, I plan on allowing the Allies to change dropzones for the three airborne divisions to give the Allied player a little more flexibility. This scenario is very complex so the PO may not perform realisitcally. This game would make a great PBEM game. If you notice any errors, please email me at snakes@kansas.net. I don't have a lot of information on British TO&E so if you have some, send them my way. Enjoy! * I am thinking about a half day version of this battle. If you would like one, please let me know. |
