OPERATION BADR: October 6,1973 ********************************************* {Prayer for Yom Kippur} *************************** "On the fast Day of Atonement it is sealed and determined how many shall pass and how many be born; who shall live and who shall die; whose appointed time is finished and whose is not". ***************************************************** INTRODUCTION: ********************* On October 6,1973, the people of Israel gathered to celebrate Yom Kippur, the most solemn of Jewish Holidays. At five past two in the afternoon, Jerusalem time, their tranquility was shattered by massive artillery and aerial bombardment along both the Egyptian and Syrian borders. Syria's Operation Badr, named for Mohammed's great victory in 624, had begun. Across the so-called "Purple Line", a Syrian torrent spearheaded by some 1.500 tanks and 1.000 guns, poured across the Golan Heights. Against them stood two understrength Israeli brigades with a total of 180 tanks and 60 Guns. The Syrian intention: to drive to Haifa and cut Israel in Two. The Israeli commanders, Colonel Ben Gal of the 7th Armored Brigade and Colonel Ben Shoam of the 188th Barak Brigade, realized that the furture of Israel depended on them and their men. In the North, the Syrian 7InfD soon became bogged down due to the difficult terrain and the fierce Israeli resistance. To the South things were much different. Deprived of its air support by the excellent Syrian anti-aircraft defenses, the 188th Brigade crumbled under the pounding of Brigadier-General Aslan's 5InfD, supported by Colonel Jehani's 1st Tank Division. The Syrian's knifed their way across the Golan, driving for the vital bridges across the Jordon River, then , at about 5 o'clock on the afternoon of October 7, the Syrians stopped. This unexplained twelve hour halt, blamed on everything from low fuel supplies to the intervention of G-d, remains the greatest mystery of the campaign. ********************************************************** VARIATION: *************** There is a chance that Lebanon will enter the war if Syria capture's Safed. *********************************************************** SPECIAL RULES: *********************** If you are playing as the Israeli's you cannot use your Fighter Bomber units to conduct Ground support until turn 6, this will reflect Israel's inability to provide ground support to her forces until after a majority of the Syrian Air defenses are destroyed. Then afterwards you can use your units for Ground support. Next The Arab player cannot use the Lebanese forces when they become activated until in the News section you see a statement which reads " Lebanon declares war on Israel, and this will occur only if Syria has captured Zefat-(Safed). and this only has a 60% chance of happening after Zefat's capture. ******************************************************* EXTRA UNITS: ******************** Israel: Divisions are add on's in this scenario, the Golani Division was not a Divsion in the Yom Kippur War, it was only a Brigade. This expansion came much later, the same goes for the Yigal Divsion this unit was not even around during this time, these units were just added inorder to see what might happen if Israel had these extra units. Syria: The two Divisions are the 10Motor Rifle Div. and the 14SF.Division, these two units were not around in the Yom Kippur War either. ******************************************************* Definitions: ************** Israel: ******* Ugda=Division in Hebrew ****************************** Final Note: ************ If Israeli forces capture Damascus, then the Arab player recieves a one time victory point bonus to reflect the anger being directed toward Israel from the Arab world. *********************************************************** I would like to thank Brian for the use of his map.I did make some changes to the map but overall it is unchanged, I thank Brian for this.Shalom |
