The Capture of Munda Airfield: Green Troops in a Green Hell July and August 1943 New Georgia Island, the Solomons Version 1.0 Dedicated to Robert S. Scott 172nd Infantry Regiment Medal of Honor 29 July 1943 Died 5 February 1999 Lest we forget . . . Must play as Americans although as American forces activate Japanese units or Japanese units are added as reinforcements, you can play them as well to improve defensive performance over the AI; Up to 34 one day turns; Japanese counters red; Allied counters mostly green; Unit size: company and battalion. Developed under TOAW Volume 1 Version 1.06. Scenario Background Briefing: Part of the overall CARTWHEEL campaign to neutralize the Japanese stronghold of Rabaul, the capture of Munda Airfield was the major objective and battle on New Georgia Island. Planning estimated one slightly reinforced division (the green National Guard 43rd Infantry Division) would be sufficient to capture the airfield. Other landings on New Georgia occured at Vangunu, Viru, Segi Point and Rice Anchorage. The neighboring island of Rendova was secured just prior to the invasion of New Georgia. None of these landings are depicted in the scenario as they were all subsidiary to and supportive of the Munda Airfield operation. The landing at Rice Anchorage was in regiment strength and was intended to cut off the Japanese sea and land lines of communication (supplies and reinforcements) to the forces at Munda Point. The landing was successful, but failed in its mission. Like the forces landed to capture Munda Airfield, the forces intended to move from Rice Anchorage and capture Bairoko and Enogai were too weak. That is why, historically, and in the scenario, the Imperial 13th Infantry Regiment is able to reinforce Major General Sasaki's Southeast Detached Force at Munda Point. It is why, ultimately, all surviving Japanese units from the battle at Munda Point escape and US forces find themselves having to fight them again, at places like Bougainville. After major reinforcements at Munda Point, primarily the green National Guard 37th Infantry Division, the arifield is captured and fulfils its mission to support the neutralization of Rabaul.
