Kursk - Army Group Center and Army Group South launch a massive offensive aimed at pinching off the salient near the town of Kursk cutting off the Voronezh and Central Fronts. Date: July 1943 Location: Ukraine Map scale: 10 km/hex Time scale: Half day turns Unit Scale: Division, Brigade, Regiment, Battalion Length: 30 Turns UNIT COLORS: GERMAN Wehrmacht - Grey on Grey Waffen SS - Black on Grey Russian Red on Red - Regular Russian Army White on Red - Guards Yellow on Red - NKVD SIGNIFICANT EVENTS: Russian Steppes Front is released by STAVKA to begin its counteroffensive on 12 July. Supplies for the Russian forces increase to support offensive. German supplies begin high and steadily decline. ********** 4 July 1943 - Germany begins its last major offensive on the East front. Almost two thousand German armored vehicles are massed just north and south of Kursk to form two armored pinchers whose aim is to met just east of Kursk and pocket the Russian forces. The Germans entrusted to their success on some of their new weapons, the Panther, Tiger, Elephant, and Sturmpanzer. Although most of these fought for the first time at Kursk, they were not present in the numbers that many people believe were there. Only the 10th Panzer Bde possesed any Panthers (200) and was attached to the GrossDeutschland Div. The Tigers were present in two seperate battalions and companies were available to the SS and the GD. The Elephants and Sturmpanzers were consolidated in the 9th Army's Panzer Bde as a special assault brigade. Against these formidable attackers, the Russians had dug in three defensive belts as the Germans did not make their offensive a secret. Also, STAVKA sent the Steppes front as a powerful armored reserve force for the salient which was finally unleashed to devastating results. Air power on both sides is roughly equal so air supermacy will be in question during the whole battle. The Germans have an almost impossible mission to capture Kursk as they are outnumbered over 4:1 in just about everything except aircraft. Their advantage is high initial supply, better trained and proficient tactics, and higher firepower. The Russians have to merely hang on till the release of the Steppes Front. |
