Kanev 1943 (Version 1.0) by Frederic Schaaff (I welcome comments, corrections and suggestions : Frederic.Schaaff@ac-grenoble.fr) Start Date : 23rd September 1943 End Date : 26th September 1943 Scale : - 1 Hex. = 2,5 km - 1 turn = Half Day Number of turns : 8 Units ranges from company to division. INTRODUCTION This is a combined river crossing/airborne drop engagement that occured on the Eastern Front in September 1943. The forcing of the Dnepr river by Soviet forces near Kanev included the largest Soviet parachute landing of World War II and resulted in a major threat to German defenses at Kiev. The Germans won at Kanev, at least for the short term, but they were unable to drive the Soviets into the Dnepr or, indeed, to prevent them from slowly expanding their bridgeheads. The Soviets were strong enough to defeat any further counterattacks, while in just the next few days, much of the strength of 3rd Guards Tank Army would reach the front. In all, Kanev was a near thing. EVENTS 1 - Soviets can get Shock (air and ground) during the first turn. 2 - The 34th Infantry Division will be withdrawn from German O.O.B. during turn 4. 3 - If Soviet units occupies hex. 4.26, the Soviet player get 15 Victory Points. This event occurs only on turn 8. 4 - There is a chance that German forces (ground and air) get a Shock value between turn 6 through 8 to retake the advantage. 5 - It is possible that some bad weather occurs during the game. 6 - Due to a lack of proficiency in distant airborne operations, the Soviet player can not drop parachute troops on German supply sources (hexes 4.26 and 17.29). If this occurs, the German player wins instantly. |
