The Great War in the West IMONS 1914Version 3.0 This scenario is designed to be played by 2 humans or as the British (Entente) forces against a computer controlled German. 1. UNIT COLORS
2. HISTORY By the end of the third week of August 1914, the German Army had overrun most of Belgium. The British Expeditionary Force (B.E.F.) had just landed in France and the B.E.F.'s commanding officer, General Sir John French, quickly sought action. The B.E.F. arrived at the Belgian town of Mons on August 20th and awaited the advancing German 1st Army under General von Kluck. The B.E.F. took up a position south of a canal stretching from Mons to Conde. On the 23rd, two corps of the 1st Army attacked the B.E.F. but, despite a move to turn the British left flank, were unable to dislodge to Brits. The B.E.F., well aware of their vulnerable position and of the approach of two more German corps, decided to undertake a fighting retreat southward from Mons with the Germans in hot pursuit. By August 29, the B.E.F. had managed to avoid two further attempts at envelopment by the Germans, had slowed the German advance, and in general had caused great confusion in the German High Command. Von Kluck would soon take his 1st Army southeastward away from Paris and towards the Marne River. 3. NOTES 3.1. FOR BOTH PLAYERS This is 1914, not 1944. Armies move slowly and supplies even more slowly. Use road and rail movement whenever possible. 3.2. ENTENTE PLAYER You have excellent troops but you are terribly outnumbered. If you stand, you'll probably lose. If you run, you'll probably lose. Your best bet, as it was historically, is to conduct a fighting retreat, seeking out defensible terrain and holding it long enough to slow the Germans, but not so long that you get annihilated. 3.3. GERMAN PLAYER (only play the Germans against a human opponent) Time is not on your side. Avoid needless fights and just take as many objectives as possible. Don't go through anything that you can go around instead. 4. Acknowledgment Special thanks to Ray Wolfe for his excellent map detail and Martin James for helping out on the initial British deployment. |
