FORTRESS STALINGRAD for 1.06: The Soviet Winter Offensive of 1942: Version 3.53 Operation Uranus (NEW OOB, TOE, OBJECTIVES POINTS AND EVENTS) ********** This scenario is a re-working of John Schettler's South Front 42 scenario and Todd Klemme Stalingrad. I was disappointed in the way these two played. I didn't have the feeling I had with WaW Stalingrad of Atomic . So, I have altered the scenario significantly. I have: 1) created new OOB and TOE more accurate 2) changed the turn scale to Half Week turns so units can move and attack in the same turn. 3) removed all german supply point not in the west edge of the map: as even a surrounded supply point delivers an unlimited amount of supply, it was impossible to simulate the lack of supply in the Stalingrad pocket. 4) given to german a air transport capacity to simulate airlift supply attempt of the 6 Army. Transport capacity is reduced when soviet occupies Pitomnik and Gumrak airfields. 5) given to german a very small chance to see Hitler release First PZ Army after turn 10. 6) assigned army support to rumanians, italians and most soviet formations to reflect tactical clumsiness. 7) lowered proficiency of italian units, except Alpini corps 8) most units of 6th Army are freezed the first turn as they were unable to regroup for a quick counterattack. 9) added aviation And numerous others changes.... There's certainly numerous errors so I will be glad to read your e-mail about. STALINGRAD Value:40. ********** While the German 6th Army struggled in the ruins of Stalingrad, the Soviets quietly deployed a massive force against the weak Rumanian armies guarding the flanks. A vast pincer operation was planned to isolate the German troops at Stalingrad, and the northern attack was launched by the 5th Tank and 21st Army against 3rd Rumanian Army on November 19th. The Rumanian formations were ill prepared to deal with the storm of armor and artillery that descended upon them, and within a day their front quickly collapsed. The following day saw similar chaos to the south of Stalingrad as 4th Rumanian Army was overrun by 57th and 51st Soviet Armies. Appreciating the gravity of the situation, Paulus immediately asked for freedom of action to extricate his army from entrapment at Stalingrad. Amazingly, Hitler ordered the 6th Army to adopt a hedgehog defense, and Luftwaffe chief Goering promised to supply some 225,000 men from the air! When the Russian pincers met at Kalach on November 24th, the fate of 6th Army was sealed. In a desperate attempt to rescue the trapped army, Hitler called on the services of Eric Von Manstein, perhaps the best strategic thinker in the German Army. Manstein haggled to scrape together enough reserve forces to hold his broken front while still mounting a strong relief attack code named "Winter Storm." Soviet army unleashed then new mobile forces on Italian Army and Hollidt Army detachment in the Don bend. Operation "Little Saturn" was beginning, threatening Morosovosk and Millerovo at first, then Rostov and the retrat line of 1st PzArmy... Design note: "Wadi" is presumed to be "Balka" for this scenario, and I have used a minor escarpment to create the Tartar wall near Stalingrad. The Don, Donetz, and Volga are considered major (Super) rivers, though the freeze will mitigate this effect somewhat. |
