Crimea 41-42 (Version 1.1) by Frederic Schaaff (I welcome comments, corrections and suggestions : Frederic.Schaaff@ac-grenoble.fr) Turns : 43 Turn Length : 1 week Map scale : 5 km/hex. Unit scale : Division/Regiment Forces : Axis (Germans/Rumanians) vs. Soviets HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Two-and-a-half months after the start of Operation Barbarossa, the Axis armies was hundreds miles into the Soviet Union. The Fuhrer became anxious about the danger presented by a Soviet-controlled Crimea, so in August 1941, he ordered his 11th Army to prepare for an operation to clear the Crimea. The 24th of September, von Manstein attacked. The fights were hard and the Soviets' resistance very fierce. One month later, Gen. Petrov ordered his units to fall back toward Sevastopol. The 11th Army was now free to maneuver. Simferopol had fallen by 1st of November and Feodosiya by 3rd of the same month ! After some counterattacks by Soviets and an offensive ordered by Stalin in the Crimea, Sevastopol was cleared by 4th of July 1942. BIBLIOGRAPHY Various books and articles but the following ones are the major sources : - McTaggart P., " Krim : The War in the Crimea, 1941-42 ", in " Hitler's Army ", Conshohocken, Combined Books, 1996. - Poirier R.G. and Conner A. Z., " The Red Army Order of Battle ", Novato, Presidio Press, 1985. SIGNIFICANT EVENTS - Soviet additional batteries : The Soviet player can get additional batteries if he choose to scuttle some of the Red Navy ships. When the right counter is moved to the peak on the off-map track, the player get one battery but a ship of the Red Navy will disappear. - Axis conditional reinforcements : The Axis player can get more reinforcements but in doing that, he gives victory points to the opponent. - Landing Preparation Box and Axis Port for Amphibious Reinforcements : Neither side can enter in these boxes. If one player try to do that, he will lose the game definitly. - 49th Mountain Corps : Historically, this corps wasn't committed in this campaign ; instead it was sent as reinforcements in Ukraine. There is a percentage (80 %) that the troops (two Mountain Divisions and the L.S.S.A.H.) composing this big unit could participate in the furious campaign. Doing so, the Soviet receive an extra amount of victory points (50) and the Axis commander need to do better than his historical counterpart ! - Opening the campaign : The Axis forces have some shock power during the first two turns of the game. - Stalin Offensive in the Crimea : Be sure that if STAVKA ordered an offensive, your army will get shock power, more replacements and active guerrillas (all for two turns). |
