Italian Invasion of Abyssinia 1935Based on personal research and David Nicolle's The Italian Invasion of Abyssinia. 1. Background After troubles on the Eritrean-Ethiopian frontier in the early 30's and mainly following Italy's Mussolini's will to present Italy as an "imperial" conquerror nation and to take revenge on the offsets of the 1890's, tension grew to escalate into limited war in 1934. Tension grew until full war is declared on October 3rd 1935 ! Italian Offensives in october were strong, but stalled against the natural barriers of North-western Ethiopia and Ethiopian counter offensives. However, with the Italian offensive from Somalia Ethiopia's empoeror Haile Selassie's forces were taken on two fronts and eventually were beaten. 2. Note on forces Italy has gathered it's best forces ever - relatively better equiped than its WWII forces, maily by borrowing motor transport from other metropolitan units, and by a high miotivation and morale. Italian Air force was also a strong motivating factor as well as the use of poison gas. Ethiopia has more numerous but poorly equipped troops and the advantage of the terrrain. |
