MORTAIN Germany's armored assault following the Operation Cobra's breakout. Date: August 6 - 9, 1944 Location: Normandy Map Scale: 2.5km per hex Time Scale: Six-hour turns Unit Scale: Battalion Length: 15 turns UNIT COLORS ALLIED U.S. - White on Green GERMAN German Heer - White on Grey German SS - Black on Grey German Luftwaffe - Blue on Grey SIGNIFICANT EVENTS US forces suffer shock effects for the first three turns of the scenario. HISTORICAL NOTES On July 25th, 1944 U.S. forces in Normandy launched Operation Cobra against the battle weary German forces defending the hedgerow country. Approximately 1,500 bombers from the Eighth Airforce conducted a saturation bombardment of the German Panzer Lehr Division. The division was literally wiped out, and within several days Patton's Third Army began to pour through the breach and race into the Brittany Peninsula. Hitler ignored the requests of his generals to retreat to a more defensive position, and ordered several panzer divisions to be moved to the area around the city of Mortain. Once assembled the large armor force was to launch an offensive to cut off the breach made after Cobra, and to isolate the majority of Patton's Third Army from the rest of the Allied forces in France. On August 6th, 1944, the forces were ready and the offensive was launched against the unprepared U.S. infantry divisions defending Patton's vital supply pipeline. Overwhelming Allied airpower destroyed most of the German tanks, which had been ordered to assault during daylight hours. By August 9th, 1944, all four attacking panzer divisions were severely depleted, and the offensive ground to a halt. Patton swept through Brittany, and returned to participate in the destruction of the remaining German forces trapped in the Falaise pocket by the August 17th. DESGINER'S NOTES In order to win, the German player MUST capture and hold the vital road town of Avranches at the end of the scenario. This will effectively cut off all supplies going to Patton's Third Army on the Brittany Peninsula. Players should be aware that the German forces are severely depleted after months of fighting in the hedgerow country. Additionally, overwhelming Allied air superiority makes the German task a very difficult and challenging one. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank Randall C. Reed, who's extensive past research made the creation of this scenario much easier. Scenario design by: James D. Burns |
