Desert Storm 91 UNIT COLORS COALITION FORCES IRAQI FORCES EVENTS BACKGROUND In August, 1990, Iraqi forces cruelly swept into Kuwait without any announcement of hostilities. In less than a week, the oil-rich country was swallowed up by the greedy Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein. Now they stood on the border of Saudi Arabia, greedily contemplating even more conquests. This unprovoked aggression prompted a vociferous world wide protest. President Bush stated the case succinctly when he declared, "This aggression will not stand." Within a week a strong US presence was in Saudi Arabia in an operation known as Desert Shield. After a steady buildup of US, British, French and other countries over a six month period, the final warning was given to Hussein to give up his mad enterprise. He ignored it. On January 15th, a simple announcement was made from the White House. It told it all. "The battle is joined" For over five weeks, sorties by the Coalition air units liquidated Iraqi air assets and hammered ground units unmercifully. Then on February 23rd, the second phase of the Allied effort to retake Kuwait began. It was code-named "Desert Storm." Though facing an army numerically stronger, the Allies took the battle to the enemy. In less than five days it was all over. Kuwait was free again, and what little remained of Saddam's once mighty army was at the mercy of the Coalition. Will it happen again, here and now? That depends upon your expertise in this recreation of the conflict. Once again, "the battle has been joined." Now you are in command. Your warring skills will decide the outcome.
