SMOLENSK 41 Smashing Through the Gate Date: July-August 1941 Location: Central Russia Map scale: 10km per hex Time scale: Full-day turns Unit Scale: Regiment/Division Length: 23 Turns UNIT COLORS: RUSSIAN White on Red GERMAN Grey on Grey: German Army Black on Grey: SS Units White on Grey: Luftwaffe SIGNIFICANT EVENTS: None **************************** Operation Barbarossa had begun with a brilliant blitzkrieg campaign through the area of Minsk, in which the Germans encircled and eliminated the bulk of the Soviet 10th, 3rd, and 13th armies. On July 3, 1941, General Franz Halder, head of the OKW, gloated "it is probably no overstatement to say that the Russian Campaign has been won in the space of two weeks." The next step of the campaign was to take Smolensk, a vital crossroads city that straddled the mighty Dnepr river. Beyond this city was Vyazma and the road to Moscow. However, this path was blocked not only by remnants of the Soviet Western Front, but also by newly arrived armies of the Reserve Front. Although these formations suffered equipment shortages and poor communications, the Germans did not even know they existed until they ran into them. The German army had the advantage of a superior command structure and logistics, but they soon found themselves outnumbered by the Soviets defending their motherland. Scenario design by Darrell Dik |
