Durchbruch - Lodz 1914 Emperors Last War Part 1 by Jaroslaw Flis November 16th-25th, 1914 5 km/hex, Half day turn, 20 turns division/brigade/regiment Green - German Blue - Austro-Hungarian Red - Russian This scenario is the first step in bigger project, based on Eastern Front Campaign 1914. The whole campaign is reconstructed in my board game "Emperors Last War". To check capability of using TOAW scenario editor to simulate WWI, I have started to prepare smaller scenarios. More information and comments - flis@if.uj.edu.pl The Battle of Lodz is one of most mobile and dramatic struggles of WWI. At end of October, after unsuccessful offensive to Warsaw and Deblin, German and Austro-Hungarian Forces start to withdraw to German border. "Russian steam-roller" can move westward. Germans divide their forces - 5 divisions of second line leave to keep front line. They will be supported by Austro-Hungarian 2nd Army, transfer form Carpatian front. 7 divisions of first line, support by two reserve corps from East Prussia and III Cavalry Corps from West, move to Torun (Thorn) area. This new 9th Army strikes north flank of Russian front. 1st Army is defeated near Wloclawek, and right wing of 2nd Army - near Kutno. 1st Army falls eastward, two corps of 2nd Army - to the south. Germans start to fill appearing gap. "Durchbruch bei Brzeziny" (Breakout through Brzeziny) is beginning of this scenario. German idea is to repeat Tannenberg. But situation was very different then 3 months earlier. Russian commander of 5th Army starts to organise big counterattack. His three corps - veterans of successful battles of Galicia and Vistula River - arrive from south to rescue threatened 2nd Army. 1st Army groups near Lowicz to cut German left wing. German Player has initial advantage, but Russian reinforcements are numerous and appear from different directions. Part of them enters with probability less then 100%, but sum of reinforcements' strength rather is fixed. Russian Player can get second half of II Corps, II/16 ID and Cossacks Guards CD or second half of V Corps and Tumanov Cavalry Corps. If German units approach Lowicz units of Russian 1st Army appears earlier. It is to simulate situation, when German commander of 9th Army was sure, that this direction is secured by I Reserve Corps fighting north of Bzura River. So - don't move German troops near Lowicz - try to catch and encircle 2nd Army. If Germans approach Tomaszow Mazowiecki, additional Russian reinforcements appear, together with some VP's. Capturing of this town is very valuable, too. Symmetrical situation is with German controlled town of Leczyca.
