VISTULA 1914 Shorted version of Eastern Front 1914 scenario. Battles of East Prussia and Galicia are resolved. Russians siege Przemysl. Germans organize 9th Army to attack Warsaw. Jaroslaw Flis flis@if.uj.edu.pl Date: September-December 1914 Location: Central-East Europe Map Scale: 50 km per hex Time Scale: Half week turns Unit Scale: Corps/Divisions Length: 24 turns Unit Colors: Russia: Yellow on Red - first line infantry White on Red - Siberian Rifles Green on Red - Turkestan and Caucasian Corps Black on Red - second line infantry Rose on Red - territorial infantry Red on Light Red - cavlary Black on Light Red - Cossacks White on Lt Red - Caucasian cavalry Red on Yellow - HQ's Red on Light Brown - fortresses White on Brown - Polish Legion Brown - Czechoslovakian Legion Germany: Green on Green - first line infantry White on Green - reserve units Grey on Green - Landwehr Black on Green - Landsturm Blue on Green - Bavarians Green on Dark Green - cavalry Green on Black - HQ's Green on Light Grey - fortresses Austria-Hungary: Blue on Blue - Austrian first line infantry Black on Blue - Hungarian first line infantry White on Blue - landsturm Dark Blue on Blue - march brigades White on Light Blue - cavalry Blue on Black - HQ's Blue on White - fortresses Gray - Polish Legions Dark Blue - Ukrainian Sich Rifles Aftermath of Tannenberg, prelude of Lodz. Mobile period of WWI Eastern Front campaign from Riga nad Minsk to Budapest. The scenario is based on my board game "Emperors' Last War", printed in Poland. Basic factors of this game are reinforcements and time-terrain system. All 500 events have been used to create mechanisms descibed below: WESTERN FRONT REINFORCEMENTS (WFR) Bringing German troops from West or AH troops from Serbia can give VP for both sides. There is special track on Baltic See to regulate it. There are eight pools of WFR. If you don't capture Free Reinforcement hex, WFR's are brought historically. PO does it this way. If you capture Free Reinforcement hex, you can go on to hexes-triggers. Units of the pool appear 1-2 turn after you occupy its hex. If you decide to bring WFR earlier, you loose VP's. If you wait, you get VP's. Each pool has its own value. Each pool has maximum delay date. Each one has alarm trigger, too. The first and second pools are brought already. Look for details in elw2.rtf file. LANDSTURM Some Central Powers units is organized durig war. There is turn-triggered event and alarm (occupy-triggered) event for each one. RUSSIAN REINFROCEMENTS Near all Russian reinforcements enter using event engine. But it is really based on turns. Each unit (sometimes two units together) has own turn triggered event with 3 turn range. See list of reinforcements in elw.rtf file. There is a chance that part of Siberian troops appear earlier then historically, but at the cost of decrease rail transport capacity. It happens always if Central Powers capture Warsaw. FORTRESSES Four Central Powers fortresses has two sets of units. One of them starts game on map. It is withdrawn and second one enters game, when Russian close to fortress. The second set is stronger, becouse one or two mobile units is withdrawn immadietly. News "Festung ... prepares for siege" is announced. You can stop this procedure by occupation of proper hex on Baltic See, using "Free garrisons" units. Each fortified bridgehead has weak point on its rear area, signed by cropland terrain. If enemy unit occupies this hex, bridgehead unit is replaced by second one - weaker. SUDDEN DEATH There is cropland area near western side of the map. Game is over if Russians occupy any of these hexes. RUSSIAN FRUSTRATIONS Russians expect territorial booties. If they have not - they loose VP. There are 3 areas which should be clear of Central Powers - Eastern Galicia, Poland west of the Vistula River and Masurian Lakeland. All dates in elw.rtf file. If any Central Powers unit enters given area beetwen given turns, Russia looses 100VP. There are 2 chanses for each area. TERRAIN TOAW river system is not adequate for big scale scenarios. I've adapted escarpments as river hexsides. But those in mountain area are rather mountain crests. Mayor escarpments simulate high mountain crests and lakes. Escarpments crossed by roads are small rivers, without - big rivers (Vistula, Neman, Dvina and Dnestr). TAOW's infantry movement is very optimistic, so I use hex size 50km, but map is prepared based on 25km/hex. COMMAND AND CONTROL There were no long time problems with co-operation between corps from different armies, during campaign 1914. Formations are only for PO - all have "free support" option. Colours are used to easy finding of HQ's, cavalry, second line units and fortresses. URBAN No urban or dense urban - 1914's troops avoided street fighting of WW2 mode. Exception - Warszawa and Lwow fortified area. HOUSE RULES No Austro-Hungarian nor Polish troops north of Torun (18,22). No rail movement on enemy controlled terrain. No rail movement between rail hexes without direct connection (f.e. 29,9 30,9). Playing Russia against PO - no sudden death north of Glaz (30,28) without capturing Poznan and Breslau before. GEOGRAFIC NAMES Many towns in Central-East Europe have different names in different languages. Former temporary Hungarian capital Pozsony has German name Pressburg and Slovakian name Bratislava. Capital of Galicia is called Lwow by Poles, Lviv by Ukrainians, Lvov by Russians and Lemberg by Germans. I've used official names from 20's. Names of Pomorze are Polish, names of East Prussia - German. Using official names from 1914 is absurdity - how to write by English Russian transcription of Polish, Lithuanian or Latvian names? So, Warszawa instead of Varshava, Katowice instead of Kattowitz, Siaulai instead of Shavle. Modern names are too funny - Gumbinnen new name is Gusev, but seargent Gusev - Soviet hero - has not been born in 1914, yet.
