EAST PRUSSIA 1914 Split scenario of Emperors' Last War - Eastern Front Campaing 1914. Jaroslaw Flis flis@if.uj.edu.pl Date: August-September 1914 Location: East Prussia Map Scale: 50 km per hex Time Scale: Half week turns Unit Scale: Corps/Divisions Length: 12 turns Unit Colors: Russia: Yellow on Red - first line infantry White on Red - Siberian Rifles Green on Red - Turkestan and Caucasian Corps Black on Red - second line infantry White on Light Red - cavlary Red on Yellow - HQ's Red on Light Brown - fortresses Germany: Green on Green - first line infantry White on Green - reserve units Grey on Green - landwehr Black on Green - landsturm Green on Dark Green - cavalry Green on Black - HQ's Green on Light Grey - fortresses FORTRESSES Three Central Powers fortresses has two sets of units. One of them starts game on map. It is withdrawn and second one enters game, when Russian close to fortress. The second set is stronger, becouse one or two mobile units is withdrawn immadietly. News "Festung ... prepares for siege" is announced. You can stop this procedure by occupation of proper hex on Baltic See, using "Free garrisons" units. Each fortified bridgehead has weak point on its rear area, signed by cropland terrain. If enemy unit occupies this hex, bridgehead unit is replaced by second one - weaker. SUDDEN DEATH There is cropland area near western side of the map. Game is over if Russians occupy any of these hexes. TERRAIN TOAW river system is not adequate for big scale scenarios. I've adapted escarpments as river hexsides. But those in mountain area are rather mountain crests. Mayor escarpments simulate high mountain crests and lakes. Escarpments crossed by roads are small rivers, without - big rivers (Vistula, Neman, Dvina and Dnestr). TAOW's infantry movement is very optimistic, so I use hex size 50km, but map is prepared based on 25km/hex. COMMAND AND CONTROL There were no long time problems with co-operation between corps from different armies, during campaign 1914. Formations are only for PO - all have "free support" option. Colours are used to easy finding of HQ's, cavalry, second line units and fortresses. URBAN No urban or dense urban - 1914's troops avoided street fighting of WW2 mode. Exception - Warszawa and Lwow fortified area. HOUSE RULES No rail movement on enemy controlled terrain. GEOGRAFIC NAMES Many towns in Central-East Europe have different names in different languages. Former temporary Hungarian capital Pozsony has German name Pressburg and Slovakian name Bratislava. Capital of Galicia is called Lwow by Poles, Lviv by Ukrainians, Lvov by Russians and Lemberg by Germans. I've used official names from 20's. Names of Pomorze are Polish, names of East Prussia - German. Using official names from 1914 is absurdity - how to write by English Russian transcription of Polish, Lithuanian or Latvian names? So, Warszawa instead of Varshava, Katowice instead of Kattowitz, Siaulai instead of Shavle. Modern names are too funny - Gumbinnen new name is Gusev, but seargent Gusev - Soviet hero - has not been born in 1914, yet.
