5th AFGHAN WAR UNIT COLOURS United Front Taliban FORCE STRENGH Taliban Approximately 44,000 personnel 27,500 Regional troops 5500 Loyal Government troops 9000 Foreign troops 1500 Chinese backed Uighurs 700 Chechen Mujadeen United Front Approximately 27,000 personnel 10500 Tajiks 9500 Uzbeks 3500 Hazaras 3500 Pashtuns US Coalition Potentially 27,000 personnel 3500 Special Forces 8500 Parachute Infantry 4000 Airmobile Infantry 3000 Marine Infantry 8000 Regular Army HOUSE RULES Do not move air units from their original hexes or entry points SIGNIFICANTS EVENTS Taliban air units & air defence will be withdrawn with the destruction of one or more squadrons USN carrier escorts can make cruise missle attacks up to 37 hexes away Theater reconnaissance will improve if you deploy UK SAS to occupy hex 26,10 before turn 13 This also allows USAF B-2's & B-1B's to begin operations & 1/7th Gurkhas to deploy when regional warlords begin to seek alliances Theater reconnaissance will improve if you deploy France's EICA to occupy hex 21,11 before turn 20 This also allows USAF B-52's to begin operations & 21e RdIM to deploy when regional warlords begin to seek alliances Theater reconnaissance will improve if you deploy US special forces to occupy Darweshan hex 17,35 before turn 30 The 75th Rangers will withdraw when Darweshan is occupied Theater reconnaissance will improve if Northern Alliance forces can occupy Mazar-i-Sharif, hex 28,9 A supply point will be established at hex 28,9 once Mazar-i-Sharif airport is repaired A supply point will be established in Herat, hex 11,19 several days after capture A supply point will be established at Camp Rhino, hex 27,34 1 week after USMC expeditionary units deploy to Pakistan USS Kitty Hawk CVBG deploys if all Coalition vessels arrive to relieve her from Persian Gulf duties Coalition members will withdraw their commitment if any of their ground units are destroyed UK, Canada & France are the exception to this withdrawal rule Afghan's traditionally don't like foreign troops in their homeland Successful actions by anti-taliban forces will encourage regional taliban warlords to seek alliance's with the US & NATO They will withdraw once an alliance has been secured This is modelled by the threshold value of the variable function It is expressed as "world opinion" in all news briefings The threshold value is unknown to keep the political situation tense To increase the variable value towards the threshold capture most of these strategic locations Mazar-i-Sharif 28,9 Talqan 39,9 Hazrat 34,8 Kunduz 36,9 Tashkurghan 31,9 Herat 11,19 Jalalabad 41,20 Kabul 36,19 Kandahar 25,31 Once captured, garrison them as recapture will cost you -15 victory points per location Local garrison units will appear in Mazar-i-Shariff & Kunduz several days after capture Allow anti-taliban forces time to build up their equipment then use them in conjuntion with special forces & NATO air support Once an alliance between NATO & Paktya warlords is secured Eastern Pashtun's will mobilize in Matun, hex 38,26 If that's not enough you also have several theater options to help achieve your objectives Be careful how you use them as they may decrease the variable value away from the threshold Too far, and you may not acheive the threshold value at all! This is a very political scenario, consider yourself Commander in Chief As President Bush every decision you make has serious consequences It's a fine line to walk, but that's what politicans do ADVICES Here is some advice from the Joint Chiefs of Staff Theater Options Risk Assessment Turn 3 Increase assistance to United Front +5 supply & 112x replacements New Equipment; Heavy Machine Guns AT-6 Spiral ATGM's 82mm Vasilyek Mortars 2S9 120mm SP Mortars 152mm Howitzers BTR-70 APC's BMP-1 ICV's BMP-2 ICV's BRDM-2 Spandrel SPATGM's T-72 (Late) Tanks BM-21 122mm SPMRL's Tracked Earth Movers 20% probability of -5 variable pts Turn 3 Allow journalists battlefield access 160 turns instead of 80 turns 10% probability of -10 variable pts (must choose before turn 4) Turn 4 Deploy UK special forces 2 companies (LRRP) 3 support units 15% probability of -5 variable pts Turn 13 Deploy French special forces 1 company (Search & Rescue) 3 support units 10% probability of -5 variable pts Turn 19 Deploy US special forces to Pakistan Approx. 4 battalions (LRRP & Para) 8 support units 12x AC-130U's 20% probability of -5 variable pts Turn 21 Dedicate all NATO air units to eliminating strategic targets No risk but all in-theater air units will be unavailable for direct air support for 2-3 weeks 75% chance of Taliban -5 supply pts 75% chance of Taliban 95x rplcmnts Turn 25 Deploy NATO air units to Uzbekistan 168x A-10's, F-15E's & F-117's 50% probability of -5 variable pts (25% probability of Uighur uprising) Turn 25 Deploy NATO air units to Tajikistan 72x F-16's, F-111's & Tornado's 40% probability of -5 variable pts (40% probability of Uighur uprising) Turn 29 Deploy Flemish special forces 1 company (LRRP) 10% probability of -5 variable pts This activates the option to deploy Italian special forces 1 week later 1 company (Anti-Terrorism) 10% probability of -5 variable pts This activates the option to deploy German special forces 6 days later 1 company (Anti-Terrorism) 10% probability of -5 variable pts Turn 30 Deploy European Airborne units 10 battalions, 6 support units 40% probability of -5 variable pts Turn 30 Deploy US 82nd Airborne Division 10 battalions, 13 support units 60% probability of -10 variable pts Turn 31 Deploy Dutch special forces 1 battalion (LRRP) 15% probability of -5 variable pts This activates the option to deploy South Korean special forces 1 week later 1 battalion (LRRP) 15% probability of -5 variable pts Turn 34 Deploy Spanish special forces 1 company (LRRP) 10% probability of -5 variable pts This activates the option to deploy Portugese special forces 2 days later 1 company (Anti-Terrorism) 10% probability of -5 variable pts Turn 40 Deploy US 101st Air Assault Division 9 battalions, 18 support units 60% probability of -10 variable pts Turn 40 Deploy Canadian special forces 1 battalion, 3 support units 15% probability of -5 variable pts This also allows 2nd Battalion Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders to deploy when regional warlords begin to seek alliances Turn 41 Deploy Swedish special forces 1 company (Parachute) 10% probability of -5 variable pts This activates the option to deploy Turkish special forces 3 days later 1 company (Anti-Terrorism) 10% probability of -5 variable pts Turn 45 Deploy Norwegian special forces 1 company (LRRP) 10% probability of -5 variable pts This activates the option to deploy Greek special forces 4 days later 1 company (LRRP) 10% probability of -5 variable pts Turn 49 Deploy Australian special forces 1 company (LRRP) 10% probability of -5 variable pts Turn 50 Deploy US 10th Mountain Division 8 battalions, 10 support units 50% probability of -10 variable pts Turn 51 Deploy Danish special forces 1 company (Parachute) 10% probability of -5 variable pts This activates the option to deploy Polish special forces 5 days later 1 company (Anti-Terrorism) 10% probability of -5 variable pts Turn 59 Deploy USMC Expeditionary Units 2 battalions, 22 support units 23 x AV-8B's & AC-130H's 50% probability of -5 variable pts Turn 59 Deploy NATO units in Turkmenistan 10 battalions, 9 support units 72x F-18's, Tornado's & Rafale's 50% probability of -10 variable pts (50% prob.of Chechen involvement) Due to a bug in theater options you will have to use the first 6 options before turn 30 or the last 6 won't appear in the display window The only deployment options that will work after regional warlords make alliances are; USMC 30% prob, -25 victory pts Canadian 10% prob, -10 victory pts Australian 5% prob, -10 victory pts Be careful not to lose NATO & coalition units This will decrease the variable value away from the threshold Also individual countries will withdraw active & pledged units US, UK, Canada & France are the exception to this withdrawal rule *********************************** All special force units are LRRP Long Range Reconnaissance Patrols (high recon, medium weapons) Unless designated Parachute (medium recon, heavy weapons) Anti-Terrorism (no recon, light weapons) Search & Rescue (high recon, light weapons) Again be careful with these units especially France's EICA which you need for laser designation duties *********************************** Your secondary objective is the terrorist infrastructure By locating & destroying Al Qaeda cabals you will gain 15 victory points per unit Attack in force as these units will disband rapidly once engaged By locating & destroying Taliban chief of staff Mullah Omar you will gain 50 victory points By locating & destroying Al Qaeda leader Bin Laden you will gain 100 victory points He won't be easy to catch though He may even try to sneak over a border then disappear! Difficulty hard Maximum handicap Possession & supply invisible There are no unit reconstitutions for both sides Both sides have similar status, proficencies, equipment, cooperation & supply levels However the Taliban have many regional alliances which can be fractured by successful actions To reflect that Afghanistan is a tough, rugged and extremely inaccessable country the following are limited unless you exercise your theater options Supply points Helicopter transport Air support range Airfields All Afghan units & formations are fictional but I have obviously made an attempt to get NATO & coalition units correct and taken a few liberties where my knowledge ends Thanks to all scenario designers whose splendid ideas, maps & OOB's are the main basis for this scenario I created the map using an atlas published in 1977 by Jarrold & Sons of Great Britain I hope it will be useful to someone |
