3. BRIEFING For months prior to June 22, 1941 the Germans had been overflying the Soviet frontier areas acquiring excellent operational intelligence. They were quite correct in feeling confident that these huge Soviet frontier forces would be overrun and doomed. However, beyond this zone there stretched a vast terra incognita for the Germans. Beyond their immediate goal of obliterating the Red Army in front of them, the overall strategic German plan simply could not envision continued strong resistance beyond the first winter, let alone ending up on the ropes in front of Moscow. No clear assessment of what the Soviets were capable of, nor the ruthless will to resist of the Soviet state, was taken into consideration by German planners. Blind hubris veiled their dimly apprehended nemesis, with its as yet vast untapped pools of manpower, and with its countless factories extending from the Volga to beyond the Urals capable of generating a staggering amount of war materičl, including tanks which, even at the outset, were better than anything the Germans had. This scenario models, in great detail, the opening 8 months of this massive campaign. Be advised the game is extremely complex and time-consuming. The attached text-document is mandatory for informed play and explanation of model dynamics. Let no one forget; Let nothing be forgotten." Olga Berggolts |
