The Austro-Prussian War 1866The Bohemian Frontier1. Background On June 22, 1866 Prussian forces invaded neighboring Austria. Chancellor Otto von Bismarck had engineered the war as part of his plan to establish Prussia as a major European state. It would be known also as The Seven Weeks War as a truce was signed on July 27. Austria lost its will to continue after its defeat at the battle of Koniggratz on July 3. This scenario postulates a longer war in which both sides choose to fight for at least 3 months. The Prussian plan involved the invasion of Saxony by the Elbe Army and the seizure of Prague by the First Army. The Second Army was to defend Silesia from an Austrian invasion or protect the eastern flank of the First Army. The Austrian army was positioned near Olmutz where it could defend Vienna, strike the flank of a Prussian invasion of Bohemia, or invade Silesia. See the attached Reafme file for further comments. |
