Version 1.0 for Toaw Vol I Version 2.0 for Cow "The Restoration of Rome" is basically a chess puzzle - an "alternative history" scenario simulating (as close as I can get TOAW I to it) a fascinating period in the history of the Roman Empire (teleported through a flaw in the space/time continuum to roughly 1934 in TOAW). A Gothic invasion has torn the Empire in half. Rebels have set up new Empires in both the West (Gallia and Britannia) and the East (most of the Eastern Empire). A series of military disasters and incompetent Emperors have brought Rome to the edge of disintegration - but that could change (and did, historically). A new and formidable leader, Claudius Gothicus, has assumed the purple, and is about to launch one of history's most remarkable counterattacks. This scenario would do poorly as the object of a "grognard review" for obvious reasons. But taken as a chess puzzle, it presents some surprisingly interesting challenges. It also offered the designer a break from the Eastern Front, and a chance to explore a favourite historical period at least a little. |
