The Austrians attack in three axis, but Bonaparte waits and decides to fight his decisive battle in the North, on the Rivoli Plateau, leaving the defence of the lower valley to Augerau. historically, Bonaparte decided to avoid to the Austrians to join their six columns by using most effectively the high terrain and the limited access to the plateau. bonaparte's plan is to use Joubert's division to hold the Austrians while Ray and Masslna divisions arrive, to give him numerical superiority. The first clashes around Montemagno are hard for both sides. The Austrians fight to almost encircle the French but Maaséna's division saves the day, released at the right moment. the Austrians retreat and Austria has to accept the peace that ends the First Coalition. |
