Burma Campaign 1942-1945Game was made for Play by Email. It will not work against the Programmed Opponent (PO). My Thanks to Antonio "Fulcrum" and Marc "Nemo" for their countless hours of helping playtest this Scenario. 1. Unit Colors 1.1. Japanese Forces
1.2. China Burma India Forces--CBI
2. Historic note China was cut quickly off from supply by way of sea even before the start of WW2. China's only link to the needed supplies and weaponry was by way of overland shipment of supplies which would flow in from Burmese ports and overland from India. Japan needed to sever these supply links and sought to cut off China by way of occupying Burma, thus cutting the overland supplies. Once Burma was taken by Japan, supplies had to be flown over the mountainous "hump" of the Himalayas. This venture was very costly and time consuming. The need to reopen a supply line back into China began the campaign to open the Ledo Road or better known as the Stilwell Road or Burma Road. Names synonymous with this historic series of events were names such as Merrill's Marauders, Wingate's Chindit force and the American Volunteer Group better known as the Flying Tigers. Piece by piece the Japanese began to lose ground and the hold they had on Burma. This game hopes to recreate the series of events which led to the eventual removal of Japanese forces from Burma. 3. Notes CBI start....Burma was Ill-prepared for an invasion at the start of the game. China was reluctant to help out the British and British were reluctant to help out the Chinese. As well, most of India's divisions and brigades were lost in Malaya, off in the Middle East or in Ceylon and few were in Burma at time of Japanese attack. The best a CBI player can do with its limited amount of forces at the start of the game, is to slow the progress of Japanese expansion into Burma. The capture of Rangoon 55:113 by Allied CBI forces will result in an Automatic and Overwhelming Victory for Allied CBI forces any time AFTER Japanese take control of the city OR if Rangoon 55:113 is held onto by Allied CBI forces past turn 20. Japanese start.... Japanese needs to advance swiftly into Burma. Rangoon 55:113 must be capture by turn 20 to avoid an automatic loss. As well, Rangoon 55:113 must be capture by turn 11 for Japanese reinforcement that are scheduled to appear. The defenders are no match for the Japanese, but the Japanese player should spend as little time as possible in destroying CBI units. If possible, a Japanese player needs to go around defenders using rear units to "mop-up" left over defenders. Lines of communication need to extend to all borders of Burma along all roads and rail lines. Dimapur 31:18 if taken by Japanese Forces is an Automatic and Overwhelming Victory for Japan! Supply...Japan's Force supply is set at 60. Allied CBI Force supply is set at 70. Each side has but 2 major supply sources on Burma's mainland at the start of the scenario. Dimapur 31:18 and Akyab 17:76 for CBI and Chiang Mai 88:91 and Nong Lu 88:137 for Japanese (with a minor supply source placed for the temporary Japanese Airbase in SE corner of map). Rangoon 55:113, when taken by Japanese forces, is a major supply source, on a major port and located on the main rail lines leading into Burma. Akyab 17:76, when taken by Japanese forces, is also a major supply source on a major port. As well there are supply points located on the important Islands. They are Port Blair 19:160 (Andaman Island) and Ramree Island 27:84. Port Blair 19:160 (Andaman Island) and Ramree Island 27:84 are major supply sources for either side (once taken). The use of supply trucks is critical for both sides increasing supply levels at the outermost reaches of supply. Supply range on supply trucks is 5 hexes. Port Blair 19:160 (Andaman Island) Supply: Supply levels will drop by 20 for CBI forces should Japanese forces capture Port Blair 19:160 (Andaman Island). The lost supply can be restored to Allied CBI units at any time Port Blair is retaken. The Port Blair supply level may change ANY NUMBER of times during the game that Port Blair changes hands! (see "GAME Extras" below) 3.1. Yearly Theater Options EACH "Year" periods have associated Theater Options. These Theater Options must be used before a Years' end, otherwise they disappear and the new Theater Options for the new Year will begin. There are 3 "Year" periods of Theater Options for both sides.
3.2. Theater options 150% shock bonus offensives Theater Options......When available they last 1 turn. The Japanese will have a Theater Option during Turn 106-166 (Period of 1944-45) for a 4 turn major offensive lasting 4 turns. Photo Recon Theater Options..........Photo recons are best used to know enemy position in preparations for offensives.....Recon Theater Options raise Theater Recon levels to 75%, but Recon at that level last 1 turn before reverting back to the base level of 10% to 30%...CBI theater recon base levels will increase yearly in the game from 10% up to 30% base level as CBI gains air superiority. Japan will have an increased theater recon base level of 20% for the 1943 period only before dropping down to base level 10% again for 1945 till end of the Scenario. Cease Fire Theater Options.......When available they last 1 turn ONLY before resorting back to open fire. Rail Transport Capacity Theater Options.......These options are used to INCREASE rail transport capacity for 1 turn only on the Rail lines of Burma and India, before returning to the base levels of Railroad Capacities for either side. Sea Transport Capacity Theater Options.......These options are used to INCREASE sea transport capacity for 1 turn only through the ports of Burma and India, before returning to the base levels of Sea Transport Capacities for either side. Japanese 33rd Division enters at Chiang Mai 88:91 Theater Option.......This Theater Option appears on turn 1, and will be available ONLY till turn 3 when it cancels. Should this Option be selected, Japanese 33rd Division (scheduled to enter at 88:11 on turn 3 as support for 55th Div.) enters instead at at Chiang Mai 88:91 on turn 3. If this option is NOT used by the end of turn 2, then Japanese 33rd Division enters as support for 55th Division behind their advance towards Moulmein (entering at 88:11)....This option will be important (whether used or not) to keep the Allied CBI forces guessing as to where best to defend Burma from whatever direction the Japanese Forces could/might enter from. CBI major air transport Theater Options........ There are 4 Theater Options of airborne operations for CBI. The first option available is Wingate's starting on turn 53. When this Theater Option is used, airborne reinforcements will appear at Lala Bazar 19:33 along with enough airlift capacity for 1 brigades. (unsupplied) The second airborne operations option available is for Wingate's Chindits forces of which is divided into two "CHINDITS" Theater Options operations with the 1st option available starting on turn 106. ***NOTE: The 1st operation must be used before the 2nd theater option will activate (2nd Operation TO will not work till 1st is used/IE: Dummy button)*** When these Theater Option are used, airborne reinforcements will appear at Lala Bazar 19:33 along with enough airlift capacity for each operation. These landing WILL be supplied if dropped near "DZ" locations near and around Mawlu/Indow area. The 4th and last airborne Theater Option available is for 44th Indian Airborne starting on turn 158. This lift is capable for all 3 brigades of 44th Ind., which will appear at Lala Bazar 19:33. CBI removal of Exclusion zone 1 Theater Option..........This Theater Option opens up the ports into/from India (west edge of map area). 0nce opened, CBI can move south by way of Sea Transport from India's ports to reinforce or attack ports in Burma and Andaman Island. CBI also needs to be aware that once opened, Japanese forces can attack/invade north through India's ports. If CBI player uses this option early, be prepared to protect your ports well. This Theater Option appears on turn 1. On turn 52, the Exclusion zone 1 Theater Option is removed if not used. On turn 53, Exclusion zone 1 is automatically removed if it had not been removed previously. IMPORTANT note on Cease Fire usage:....Should one side choose a cease fire Theater Option on the SAME turn another side chooses a Sea Lift (or Air Lift) Theater Option, It would be wise to "embark" those units using your available Sea Lift (or Air Lift) capacity on the Cease Fire turn event. The cease fire will not allow the units that "embarked" to move DURING the cease fire, but the units will be able to be moved by way of Sea Lift (or Air Lift) on the open fire period immediately following the Cease fire. IMPORTANT note on Theater Option usage:........No 2 alike Theater Options can be used on 2 consecutive turns as the 1st will cancel the 2nd. As in (cease fire--followed by another--cease fire) or (offensive--followed by another--offensive) or (photo recon--followed by another--photo recon) In other words:.... An offensive Theater Option used by Japanese on turn 5 that gives Japanese 150% shock will return the Japanese to normal (100%) shock on turn 6 Regardless of if the Japanese pushed another offensive Theater Option on turn 6. In other words:.........If Japanese use offensive Theater Option on turn 5, then Japanese must wait till turn 7 or later till Japanese is able to use an offensive Theater Option again. Otherwise an offensive theater option is wasted. I have included a players aid in pointing out when an offensive has ended or a cease fire is over etc...by noting the "news" where a series of 3 "***" means a CBI theater option has ended, or a series of 5 "*****" meaning a Japanese Theater Option has ended. Multiple Theater Options that have different effects CAN be used on any one turn (such as a photo recon TO and an offensive used on the same turn) Using 2 of the same type of theater options will simply waste a theater option (pushing 2 offensive theater options on the same turn will only get 1 offensive while using up 2 offensive theater options) SPECIAL NOTE on reconstitutions: NO unit in the game will reconstitute. In other words once a unit is destroyed, it is out of the game. 3.3. Victory Points system The capture of Rangoon 55:113 by Allied CBI forces will result in an Automatic and Overwhelming Victory for Allied CBI forces any time AFTER Japanese take control of the city OR if Rangoon 55:113 is held onto by Allied CBI forces past turn 20. The capture of Dimapur 31:18 by Japanese Forces is an Automatic and Overwhelming Victory for Japan! There are only 4 Objectives with VPs, Rangoon 55:113, Akyab 17:76, Mandalay 54:62 and Myitkyina 67:24. Each is worth 25 points. A player needs to occupy 3 of the 4 to win. Mandalay 54:62 and Myitkyina 67:24 should turn out to be the key to victory for either side as these will have the most likely chance to change hands. 3.4. GAME Extras Release of Japanese River Patrol Boats.......The Japanese have 4 River Patrol Boats that must be "released" in order for the Japanese to use them. Release comes from 4 possibilities. 1 type of early release comes if CBI units enter/leave the ports by way of navel embarked units to/from either Tavoy, Ramree Island, Rangoon or Martaban/Moulmein. By the action of CBI naval embarked units moving adjacent to the Japanese River Patrol boats, this will force the River Patrol Boat's formation orders to change from delay, to attack (making them activate). Another type of early release comes if Japanese attack and force a retreat of any of the "Civilian Dummy" units (4 of them marked as CIV colored black on Dark Blue). Each unit when attacked will retreat into River Patrol Boats' ZOC forcing the River Patrol Boat's formation orders to change from delay, to attack (making them activate). Last type of early release comes if any of the patrols are attacked by Allied Air units. Otherwise, all patrol boats activate on turn 53 (start of 1943 period). Locations of the River Patrol Boats are: Ramree Island 27:84, Rangoon 55:113, Martaban 71:115 and Tavoy 71:142. Port Blair 19:160 (Andaman Island) Supply:........At start, Port Blair is under CBI control. During the Campaign, this Island and it's airbase was a major Heavy Bomber base for the Japanese used in bombing the port of Calcutta. Should the Japanese capture this Island the Force Supply level of CBI will decrease by 20 (decreasing CBI Force Supply from 70 down to 50). Should the CBI retake the Island, the supply level of CBI will increase back to its 70 Force Supply level. The 20 points of supply can be restored or lost any number of times throughout the game any time Port Blair changes hands. The Burma Road:.........The Burma road in this game was created using a broken rail link. This link is hypothetical (it never existed in the campaign historically) But for game terms, it represents supply unimpeded for Chinese forces should this 'broken' rail line be completely repaired. The link starts at Ledo (top of map) and runs through Myitkyina 67:24 and Bhamo 66:37. The CBI forces can start building this "road" (rail supply link) to China at any time during the game. Should this link be completed (under CBI control), this completed rail supply link from Dimapur into China will give China the benefit of full supply levels. Either side should use judgement as to when and how much of this link to repair. Irrawaddy and Chindwin River Crossings:......The Irrawaddy and Chindwin Rivers in Burma have but a very few locations along their length where Corps or Army level 'Bridging units' can aid in Ferry Operations in crossing these swift rivers. Very few bridges spanned the Irrawaddy and Chindwin during the period and most were located towards their headwaters to the North. Each force, CBI or Japanese, will have Corps or Army units. (Mountain Inf., tank, recon, cav, ferry/bridging, engineering, but most importantly supply) These are specialized units needed by the many Divisions to function. The proper use of each of these is to sector each of your Corps or Army units with any number of Divisions within a separate specialized area of Burma. (as in for CBI to have 4th Corp units as the specialized units for 17th Ind, 2nd Inf and 5th Ind in charge of protecting Imphal) or (for Japanese to have 15th Army units as the specialized units for 33rd, 55th and 56th divisions in charge of attacking Imphal) NOTE: there are NO headquarter units for either side in this game as I felt it needless in this format/scale. |
