2. Background From the first hours of war Polish Army "L? was under heavy pressure of German 10th Army supported by elements of 8th Army.At that time Army "L? consisted only from three infrantry divisions ( 30th,28th,10th ) and one cavalry brigade ( Woly? CavBde),the destruction of Polish 7th ID near Czestochowa opened left flank of the Army, from that reason contact with Army "Krak?was lost.Commander of A."L? ,gen.Juliusz R?l hoped that the gap on left flank would be closed by Northern Group of Army "Prusy" near Piotrk?rybunalski.Unlucky for R?l gen.Dab-Biernacki ,commander of Army "Prusy" was unable to coordinate actions of his divisions, after 19th ID was destroyed at the outskirts of Piotrk?e withdrawn the rest of his divisions to the east bank of Wisla river. There were also second chance to hold blitz near L?or Piotrk? There were Polish Army "Pozna?n the right flank of A."L?,still fresh, and slowly withdrawing deeper to the east.Com. of Army "Pozna?en.Kutrzeba all the time was asking for permission for counterattack to support A."L?,but Polish Chief Commander marsh.Rydz-Smigly ordered him to withdraw his army without any actions against German 8th Army. At that situation for soldiers and officers of Army "L? the only way was to fight and die with honour with no hope for victory. |
