Great War in the East (1941-1945) POTOAWIII - PO version February 2007 Thanks to John Michiels for the original and Piero Falotti's version from which this one has been derived. 1. Notes - I used to own Avalon Hill's "Russian Front" boardgame on which this scenario is based.
- Like the huge TOAW "Fire In The East" this scenario covers the entire war on the Eastern front.
- Because of the smaller scale some things couldn't be kept historical but it still is a remarkable scenario.
- Small scale but in my opinion not too much in the "beer and pretzel" category.
I tried to refine this scenario in the following ways. - Some mods to the map.
- Some changes in OOB and equipment.
- I did away with commanders' names in formations and HQ's as they changed so much during the campaign.
Hitler changed his commanders as often as a decent person changes underwear ;-)
I tried to give the Soviet formations as historical as possible their Front names and -also as much as possible- their historical army numbers. - Set reconstitution to "fixed" so that all units don't reappear in the same spot.
Note that Soviet "reserve" formations DON'T reconstitute.
Maybe that will have to change to balance the scenario... more playtesting will determine that. - Set the PO for both sides.
After fine-tuning several PO vs PO tests ran balanced into 1943.
The Germans took Leningrad (as they could have done if not prevented to do so by Hitler, who wanted to starve the city to death)
On the other hand, advancing in the South proved more difficult.
In my opinion this scenario can be won by either side. The only difference is that the Soviets can buy time, something the Axis don't have... for them speed is of the essence. - I kept the weather and supply events programmed by Piero Faloti in place as they are good
2. HOUSE RULES - Finnish units can not advance beyond Repino and the hexes marked ***
Once Leningrad becomes German controlled these restrictions are lifted. - Axis minors, except Slovakians, may not stack together. If forced to do by retreat they must exit the hex at the next possible turn even this calls for additional retreat or an attack to exit the hex.
- Axis minors except Slovakians may not participate in the same attack.
- No Hungarian, Slovakian, Romanian or Italian units may be send to Finland.
- When Finland surrenders all remaining German units must leave the
country.
