Year of the TigerVersion 1.0 1. Historical Background Since 1983 Sri Lanka has been involved in a state of civil war. At the end of the 90's one group had risen to be the leader of the rebel cause, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). By late 2001 the LTTE had finally forced the Sri Lankan government to withdrawal what remained of its force from Jaffna City, the traditional capital of the Tamil state. By 2005 the LTTE had driven into most of the territory it claimed as the Tamil state. On January 5th, 2006 a cease fire brokered by the Norwegian government ended the fighting and offered an chance of peace to the war weary people of Sri Lanka. Unfortunately it was not to be. It took 4 months to even decide on place of the peace talks. The talks produced nothing, only more anger on both sides. On May 17th 2006 a truck bomb destroyed the Norwegian embassy in Jaffna. The LTTE accused Buddhist extremists in Colombo of planting the bomb. On June 19th, 2006 LTTE guerillas attacked the police convoy escorting the Indian ambassador to Sri Lanka. The entire delegation was killed. On August 12th Tamil extremists destroyed any hope of American sympathy for their cause when a car bomb killed 5 US Marines in a Colombo nightclub. All hopes of peace are forgotten. 2. Operational Briefing The LTTE and the SLDF have both moved forces to the ceasefire boundaries. At any moment the peace can be broken by accident or design. India has issued statements of its intention to stay out of the conflict all together. The Norwegians are still calling for peace but neither side is listening. 2.1. SLDF/US Commander At your disposal are what remains of the Sri Lankan Army, Air Force and Navy. And it's not much. Your forces lack supply and support in the beginning. BUT the US government does have some forces in the area that will deploy on your behalf. IN fact the Engineers of the 1st Marine division have been in country for over 3 months working on various projects. US support is expected to be light. Colombo must not fall; it is the major port of entry for US troops, without Colombo US aid will evaporate. 2.2. LTTE Commander At your disposal are the battle harden units of the LTTE. Over five Tiger battalions of veterans are deployed to strike. Also with the aid of Chinese supplies your armored forces are on par with those of the SLDF. You must strike fast and destroy Colombo; other wise US aid will strengthen the SLDF. You will receive two regiments of newly raised troops and some aircraft from your Chinese backers. 3. Scenario Notes This is a very fictional scenario. I doubt the US would actually step in and support either side, and I doubt the conflict will be over any time soon. |
