Battle for Neretva 1943The (other) Fall Weiss1. Background In 1943, German anti-partisan operations in Yugoslavia reached their climax. Germany has up to then avoided dealing with Yugoslav Communist Partisans who liberated significant parts of the central mountainious countryside, but were forced now to commit for fear of Allied invasion of Balkans. Because of this, several combined Axis operations were undertaken in order to destroy the communist Partisan main body and leadership. Fall Weiss (or operation White) was the largest of these and was launched in January. The recently taken city of Bihac was the first major objective in the three phase operation, but the Partisan body successfully escaped destruction. With a fighting retreat, the Partisans withdrew over entire Bosnia, crossing the Neretva river where the operation reached its climax and escaped east. Once there, they defeated a significant force of Chetniks, and could escape untroubled. Fall Weiss had failed. 2. Notes The Axis main objective is the destruction of the Partisan Command unit which immediately ends the scenario. Secondary objectives are destruction of two related units (Communist Party HQ and Partisan Hospital) which carry many points. The Partisan objective is to keep these three units intact and capture the Escape route (hex 50,45) which ends the scenario as point-scoring, while Partisans get 50 VPs. Territory is not the purpose. There are just a few objectives which carry little points: destruction of units carries much more, so be careful not to waste men! Capture of Bihac will end phase 1 and change strategic objectives for POs. |
