BATTLE OF BLENHEIMPBEM; British PO; French PO 1. Background The Battle of Blenheim was fought during the War for Spanish Succession. Louis XIV sought to knock Emperor Leopold out of the war by seizing Vienna, the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. The Duke of Marlborough marched his British Army 250 miles from the low countries to the Danube River in 5 weeks to join his Austrian Allies and attack the French and Bavarians before they reached Vienna. The British and numerous Allies met and attacked a slightly larger French and Bavarian force near Blenheim, Bavaria on the Danube River on August 13, 1704. 2. Notes To make the scale work and not have stacking problems, each squad represents roughly 100 men. Although losses in the battle were very heavy (the French lost 20,000 dead and 14,000 prisoners of approximately 56,000 engaged), I have raised the Attrition Divider from 10 to 12 so that the calvary battalians aren't wiped out the first time they engage an infantry regiment. For scoring purposes, the British and Allies have a 300% loss intolerance and the French have a 400% loss intolerance to reflect that if the battle were a draw and both sides had heavy losses, the French would not be able to continue to Vienna and the British and Allies would have achieved a strategic victory. Many historians believe the French lost the battle because a large number of infantry battalians were trapped in Blenheim by a much smaller British force at the beginning of the battle. To simulate this, but still permit the French player to correct the error, the French forces around Blenheim are static for the first few turns of the game. |
