RemagenFirst Bridge Over The RhineVersion: 1.0 PO and PBEM Toaw: 3.2.29.27 1. Background If playing the US Force, in order to recreate the historical cautious expansion of the bridgehead, do not divide units (one exception - the US Tank Battalions may divide). Once there are more than three US units east of the Rhine, it is recommended to keep a linear defense of continuous US units and/or zones of contol, anchored at both ends on the Rhine River. There is also a 'US Limit of Advance' line that the US units should not cross. These three rules will prevent the US Human player from quickly overrunning the map, and will recreate the historical situation. Historically, the Allies had a plan for crossing the Rhine, and Remagen had no part in these plans. When the bridge there was taken by surprise, the decision was made to not alter the original plans, and to hold the Remagen bridgehead with 5 divisions while the main Rhine crossings were made in other areas. Therefore, expansion of the bridgehead developed slowly and cautiously. The main objective in the area was to block the autobahn and hold the bridgehead. Historical rate of advance:
On the German side, confusion reigned and initially no organised resistance could be made. General Fritz Bayerlein was given a Kampfgruppe that contained elements of the 11th, 9th and Lehr Panzer Divisions along with the 106th Panzer Brigade and was told to eliminate the bridgehead. On March the 10th and 11th the force moved towards the bridgehead. Due to conflicts with Army Group B commander Model, insufficient strength and Bayerlein's indecision, the attack made no gains. Another unsuccessful attempt was made on the 13th, after which there was no hope of eliminating the bridgehead. When playing the German side against the PO, note that the US forces may stray over the 'US Limit of Advance' line, and may not keep a continuous line of units/zones of control. Some US units have a movement allowance of only 1. These units were historically stationed near the Rhine in direct defense of the bridge, and are therefore not meant to advance further east. The 'Red Ball Express' unit at the west edge of the map and the 'AG B Model' unit at the east edge of the map are not in play. The player need not be concerned with them. 2. References
