2. Historical Background
150 years ago, Gettysburg became the arena of the bloodiest battle in the Civil War between Northern- and Southern States. Both armies fought on the hills and fields around the small town in Pennsylvenia for three days, with a cost of 8.000 dead soldiers. Historicans regard the battle as the turningpoint in the Civil War.
The Southern States had left the Union over a dispute on slavery and founded the Confederate States of America. In the third year of the war, General Robert E. Lee lead the Southern army after a long series of victories in Union territory for the first time. The Union troops, led by General Meade, took up the pursuit. On July, 1st 1863, both armies met at Gettysburg. First the battle went well for the Confederates, but on the third and last day of the fighting Meades Northern army turned the tables.
3. The Units
After the study of a lot of sources in the Internet, with all my afford, I tried to place the correct units and formations.
For example all HQ's have their historical leaders and lead the historical number of men into battle.
As infantry-equipment I chose the Enflied-Muscet, as this weapon was used by both sides equally.
Besides this, it is almost impossible to use all the weapons, which were used, as it was a mingle-mangle of fireweapons.
Looking close on the units, you will find some names used twice, especially with artillery-units of the Northern States.
The Union artillery was used in several batteries, and the TOAW-engine does not allow to use such long names.
So, for better payability, I chose to use some names twice.
After long consideration I decided to give nearly no replacements to any side. This may be the historical approach. Only officers get some (low) replacements, as here disabled officers would be replaced by others.Evaporated units will not reconstitute to prevent players from suicide-attacks.
During the rounds of 14-24 and 38 - 48 no combat actions and movements are possible enemy territory, so it is just for the Confederate essential to convert the site to perform well during the night troop movements.
5. Victory Points
The elucidation of the Confederates at the beginning is 10 percent and 15 percent of the Union.
The elucidation of the Union rises until turn 20 automatically to 30 percent every 10 turns after a further 5 percent.
The elucidation of the Confederacy depends on the player.
With the occupation of major hills to the confederation replaced by the following percentages. Losing the rebels these points again naturally falls again and the Enlightenment.
Oak Ridge, Cemetary Hill, Culps Hill, Little Round Top and Big Round Top bring each 10 percent.
McPhersons Ridge, Seminary Ridge, Cemetery Ridge, Benner´s Hill and Wolf´s Hill bring each 5 percent.
Artillery must have a line of fire to shoot, indirect fire is not possible.Players should try to imagine, how the terrain looks like and not try to shoot through hills.
It is not allowed to destroy bridges.
I've added a few songs and sound effects to improve the flair of the scenario. To use them please add the 1863-folder into the toaw-sound-folder
That's it, the Battle of Gettysburg can begin and I whish all TOAW-players much fun with this scenario.
9. Working progress
With time passing by, I'll make some changes and additions to the scenario. Therefore I ask all players to send me wishes, complaints and all forms of feedback.
